ASK ME HOW I FEEL
Writers: Holly Knight/Albert Hammond
Oh I’m waiting in the storm
Ask me how I feel
When things are goin’ wrong
why don’t you ask me how I feel
The night is awful cold
Ask me how I feel
You’re much too loose to hold
Why don’t you ask me how I feel
I close my eyes to follow you
to my surprise you’re so untrue
And I’m crying I’m dying
Oh I’m waiting in the storm
Ask me how I feel
And when you keep me hangin’ on
Why don’t you ask me how I feel
The waters run so deep
Ask me how I feel
When I don’t get any sleep
Why don’t you ask me how I feel
And when you’re down
You lean on me
You’re a fool too blind to see
That I’m crying I’m dying
Oh I’m waiting in the storm
Why don’t you ask me how I feel
What the hell is going on
Why don’t you ask me how I feel
When you stay out late at night
Ask me how I feel
When you think that I’m uptight
Why don’t you ask me how I feel
Oh oh oh
You don’t treat me tender
No matter what I do
But I’m the great pretender oh oh oh oh
I’m waiting in the storm
Come on and ask me how I feel
When things are going wrong
Why don’t you ask me how I feel
The night is awful cold
Ask me how I feel
You know you’re much too loose to hold
Why don’t you ask me how I feel
I’m waiting in the storm
Ask to me how I feel
What the hell is going on
When you stay out late at night
You never ask me how I feel
You just say that I’m uptight
When you’re down I do for you
And now I find that you’re untrue
oh oh oh oh oh
I’m waiting in the storm
Ask me how i feel
When things are going wrong
Come on an’ ask me how I feel
The night is awful cold
Ask me how I feel
You know you’re much too loose to hold
Come on and ask me how I feel
1. ASK ME HOW I FEEL
BE TENDER WITH ME BABY
Writers: Holly Knight/ Albert Hammond
You’ve got the right to tell me it’s all over
It isn’t like me to be begging you
Don’t let go, don’t let go
just stay with me another day
And when I’m not myself
please understand me
I’m so confused I don’t know what to do
but don’t give up, don’t give up
it just may take a little time
Be tender with me baby
I’m so afraid you’ll go away
Be tender with me baby
Always, always
I know that you’ve been patient
with my weakness
and that you hate to see me cry
but I know, yes I know
it doesn’t hurt to be this way
and I’m so lonely I could die
Be tender with me baby
I’m so afraid you’ll go away
Be tender with me baby
Always, always
Why does my heart keep on hurting
why do I feel, feel like I do
I hope you see this is
not really me
and it’s just a phase that I’m going through
Be tender with me baby …
Be tender with me baby
I’m so afraid you’ll go away
Be tender with me baby
Always, for always …always
2. BE TENDER WITH ME BABY
YOU CAN'T STOP ME LOVING YOU
Writers: Holly Knight/ Albert Hammond
You can run and you can hide
You can tell me you’re untrue
You can play around with my feelings
Say you found somebody new
But there’s one thing you can’t do
You can’t stop me loving you
Oo you know I love you baby
Oo why do you treat me this way
Oo I don’t deserve this kind of treatment
when I’ve been so good like a lover should
And I’ve loved you in every way
You can run and you can hide
You can tell me you’re untrue
You can play around with my feelings
Say you found somebody new
But there’s one thing you can’t do
You can’t stop me loving you
Oo you’re gonna drive me crazy honey
Fool why are you so blind
Cool oh you think you’re so cool now baby
But you just can’t see all the love in me
that I give you all the time
You can run and you can hide
You can tell me you’re untrue
You can play around with my feelings
Say you found somebody new
But there’s one thing you can’t do
You can’t stop me loving you
Oo I know I’m gonna be fine
You ain’t gonna pull my chain
I ain’t gonna change my mind
Oo how do you feel now baby
Oo I bet you feel real tall
Oo where did you leave your manhood, honey
When I give you love and it’s not enough
And you try to make me look small
You can run and you can hide
You can tell me you’re untrue
You can play around with my feelings
Say you found somebody new
But there’s one thing you can’t do
You can’t stop me loving you
3. YOU CAN'T STOP ME LOVING YOU
THE BEST
Writers: Holly Knight/ Mike Chapman
I call you when I need you
and my heart’s on fire
Come to me come to me wild and wired
You come to me
give me everything I need
You give me a lifetime of promises
and a world of dreams
You speak the language of love
like you know what it means
And it can’t be wrong
take my heart and make it strong babe
You’re simply the best
Better than all the rest
Better than anyone
Anyone I ever met
I’m stuck on your heart
I hang on every word you say
Tear us apart
baby I would rather be dead
In your heart I see the start
of every night and every day
In your eyes I get lost
I get washed away
Just as long as I’m here in your arms
I could be in no better place
You’re simply the best
Better than all the rest
Better than anyone
anyone I ever met
I’m stuck on your heart
I hang on every word you say
Tear us apart
baby I would rather be dead
Each time you leave me I start losing control
you’re walking away with my heart and my soul
I can feel you even when I’m alone
oh baby don’t let go
You’re simply the best,
Better than all the rest
Better than anyone
Anyone I ever met
I’m stuck on your heart
I hang on every word you say
Tear us apart
baby I would rather be dead
You’re the best
4. THE BEST
‘The Best, is one of my most recognizable tunes as well as my biggest earner. Mike Chapman and I knew it was a hit song, but I don’t think either one of us ever imagined it would do as well as it did. Also known as ‘Simply The Best’, we originally wrote the song for Paul Young, a British pop star, but his manager passed on it. Bonnie Tyler recorded the tune next, and it was on the same record as another tune I cowrote, ‘Hide You Heart’, but the record met with mild success. Just after her album came out, my publishers played the song to Tina who fell in love with it. She and her manager Roger Davies called me to tell me she really wanted to record it, but felt it was missing a bridge and key change after the bridge. Mike and I had gone our separate ways for a while, and I had signed to EMI Publishing. We hadn’t worked together in a while, but the rewrite on the tune brought us back together, and the rest is, as they say, history. Oddly enough, The Best didn’t chart higher than #12 in the U.S., but it went through the roof to number one all over the rest of the world. It became one of Tina’s biggest and well loved tunes, and when asked in interviews if she had to pick one tune she would want to be remembered by, she has said, The Best.
I know she loves the positive message and doesn’t want to sing depressing tunes. When I’ve seen her in concert, it is an incredible rush to see 20,ooo people singing the lyrics along with her – there is nothing like it. As for Ms Tina, I guess I don’t have to tell you , she is an amazing performer and singer. She is as iconic as one can get. This tune belongs in my top ten of favorite songs I wrote.
Foreign Affair ended up being an especially great project for me, Tina recorded four of my tunes on it. Besides The Best, Tina recorded three tunes I cowrote with another talented writer, Albert Hammond. I had only met Albert recently on a songwriters project that took fifty writers to Russia. Upon our return to the US we started collaborating and many tunes we wrote during a two month period got recorded by several artists. As far as Foreign Affair, Tina called to tell me she was in town, that she loved the new bridge to The Best, and asked if I had any other tunes to play her. I threw four tunes on a cassette and went to visit her in her hotel. She picked three of the tunes and said she wanted to record all three. I had to pinch myself, this would make six tunes of mine she had cut to date, and I was overjoyed.
The fourth tune on the tape was Love Touch and she ended up recording that one as well for another record later on. Tina has been the biggest lucky charm on my bracelet’. – HK
