HIDE YOUR HEART
Writers: Holly Knight/ Paul Stanley/ Desmond Child
Johnny saw her riding on a streetcar named Desire
His fate was sealed
She could see him coming like a hundred other liars
It was no big deal
Rosa had a lover on the shady side of town
Tito, he was king of the streets
And she was his possession like a jewel on his crown
Johnny better run, better run
Better hide your heart, better hold on tight
Say your prayers cause there’s trouble tonight
When pride and love battle with desire
Better hide your heart ’cause you’re playing with fire
The ride was over but the story doesn’t end
He took her heart
She looked him in the eye
and said they couldn’t meet again
You could see the trouble start
The word went out that Rosa’s messin’ with someone
It was on the street
Tito looked for Johnny with a vengeance and a gun
Johnny better run, better run
Better hide your heart, better hold on tight
Say your prayers ’cause there’s trouble tonight
When pride and love battle with desire
Better hide your heart, ’cause you’re playing with fire, come on
Yes Johnny’s holdin’ Rosa on a rooftop in the night
As time stood still
They couldn’t hear him coming ’til he had them both in sight
You could feel a chill
A shot ran out like thunder and the blood was on her hands
With nothing won
When someone lies dying, lovers finally understand
Baby hide your heart better hold on tight
Say your prayers, ’cause there’s trouble tonight
When pride and love battle with desire
Better hide your heart cause you’re playing with fire come on
Better hide your heart, hold on tight
Cause when pride and love battle with desire
Hide your heart, ’cause you’re playing with fire
Hide your heart, hold on tight
Say your prayers, ’cause there’s trouble tonight
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Pride and love battle with desire
Hide your heart, ’cause you’re playing with fire
Hide your heart, hold on tight

1. HIDE YOUR HEART
‘Hide Your Heart has been covered by KISS, Bonnie Tyler, Molly Hatchett and Ace Frehley (formerly of KISS) , and I have to say that while I love KISS’ version, Ace’s cover of of it is my favorite. It’s the most rocking.
‘I’ve known three of the members of Kiss since I was 20. When I joined my first band, Spider, our drummer Anton Fig was starting to do sessions on the side, and he got hired to play drums on Ace Frehley’s solo record. Through our friendship with Ace we met Bill Aucoin, Kiss’s manager, who also started managing us. The first record I ever played on was ‘Kiss Unmasked’. I was visiting another band at the Record Plant and was sitting in the lounge talking to them when Gene Simmons walked in and asked me if I would put a keyboard down on one of the tunes, and one tune led to another until I realized I had pretty much played on the whole record. When the record went gold, the band was really nice and sent me a gold plaque which I still treasure in my studio. I got to know Gene and especially Paul pretty well. Fast forward to years later after I had started having hits as a songwriter, I reconnected with Paul and he asked me to write with him for several records. Our first effort was ‘Hide Your Heart’(cowritten with Desmond Child) – Years later we worked on Psycho Circus together, and then Paul’s most recent solo record.
I never really understood what Kiss was about til I went to see them live in the 80′s. At that point I already knew them, so seeing them dressed up in full Kiss Regalia, spitting blood and fire in huge arenas seemed surrealistic to me. Back then no one knew what they looked liked without their makeup, but for me it was the other way around . I did have some fun times with those guys. Especially Ace because he was the most outrageous.’ –HK
